Out for an evening walk east along Bernard Mountain Trail from Mill Creek Rd. I enjoyed the quiet forest and views of Graybeard, Jerdon Mtn, and others to the east. The silvery sounds of Long Branch. On my return I encountered two folks on mountain bikes riding along in the dark. I stopped to talk with Dave. With only the light of a full moon (through solid overcast skies) I shared the colorless world that was the normal world of deer, raccoon, opossum, mice, fox, bears and other crepuscular wildlife. The bright colors that we humans take for granted are not the everyday reality of most four-footed animals in the woods. Unlike the other vertebrates, I lacked the keen sense of smell and hearing that dominate their sensory world. With previous windy, dry days around New Years Day it was interesting to see how some aspects of the hillsides had been swept bare, no leaves, while other aspects had been piled deep.
